This programme area is dedicated to strengthening belonging, reshaping narratives and advocating for acceptance — giving everyone the security to be who they are, without judgement.
For many people, simply being themselves means that they can’t take their safety for granted — whether emotional, social or physical. Fear of rejection, discrimination, or violence forces people to hide parts of who they are just to stay safe.
True safety goes beyond keeping people out of harms way. It’s about equipping communities to stand together and stand up for one and other.
By challenging harmful perceptions, creating environments where people feel they belong and fostering a culture of respect, the world becomes a place where everyone feels seen, valued, and free to live as themselves.

Building Safety
What it looks like in action with ReBit

In Japan, many young LGBTQ+ people are growing up without the understanding, representation, and support they need.
This leaves countless of children isolated, feeling invisible, and even battling suicidal thoughts. Without the security to explore and express who they are when they’re young, these challenges can follow young people in adulthood too.
ReBit is tackling this by working where they can make lasting change – in schools. With one of their largest ever grants, we’re helping them transform classrooms across Japan into:
- Safer spaces today by training teachers to better understand LGBTQ+ students so they have trusted adults that help them feel seen and supported in their classrooms right now.
- Safer spaces tomorrow by delivering lessons that reach more than 11,000 young people, sparking empathy, shifting attitudes and a new generation that’s more accepting of difference.
